Infection control sits inside Clinical Patient Care, the largest domain on the CCMA exam at 56 percent of scored items. Encodr drills the PPE sequences, precaution levels and hand hygiene rules until they are automatic.
Get started freeThe logic is contamination. The outside of the gloves, the outside of the goggles, the gown front and sleeves and the front of the mask are all treated as contaminated, so gloves come off first and the mask comes off last, because the face is the most protected area. If your hands touch a contaminated surface during any step, do hand hygiene right then, between steps, and again at the end. Everything comes off before leaving the patient room except a respirator, which is removed after leaving the room and closing the door. This quiz teaches the CDC sequence in which each item is removed on its own; CDC also publishes a variant where the gown and gloves come off together, and your program may teach that one, so follow your instructor's version on a skills check.
Surgical masks go with droplet precautions and splash protection; an N95 respirator goes with airborne precautions such as TB, measles and chickenpox. Match the PPE to the precaution level rather than wearing everything for every patient. The explainer is PPE donning and doffing order, and the whole infection control unit is in the free NHA CCMA course. Medical assistants who also draw blood can practice the order of draw the same way.
This tool is a study aid for the CCMA exam, not clinical guidance. Real care follows the provider's orders and your facility's protocols.

Chain of infection and medical asepsis for the CCMA exam: six links and how to break each, standard vs transmission-based precautions, and disinfection levels.
The standard phlebotomy order of draw runs blood cultures, light blue, serum, green, lavender, gray. Why the sequence exists, what goes wrong when it is broken, and how to practice it.
The NHA CCMA exam has 150 scored items, 30 pretest items and 3 hours. Here is what each of the 7 domains covers, the item counts, and the 390 passing score.
