Texas insurance exam day: ID, arrival and retakes

Plenty of candidates who know the material get turned away or rattled on exam day for avoidable reasons. These rules come from the Pearson VUE Texas Insurance Licensing Candidate Handbook (#124400) and apply to the General Lines property and casualty exam and the Life, Accident and Health exam.

Booking and changing your appointment

• Reserve at least 24 hours ahead. There are no walk-ins.
• Change or cancel at least 48 hours before your appointment, or you forfeit the fee.
• If you cannot attend for a reason like illness, a death in the family, a disabling accident, court or jury duty, military duty or weather, request an excused absence within 14 days.
• You pay when you reserve, and the exam fee is not accepted at the test center.

Arrival and ID

• Arrive 30 minutes early.
• Bring two forms of current signature ID, with names that exactly match your registration. The primary ID must be government-issued, with photo and signature, and not expired. The secondary ID needs a signature, for example a credit or debit card.
• Your ID must be in English, and there is no grace period for an expired ID.

Calculators

The life and health handbook allows silent, hand-held, non-printing calculators with no alphabetic keypad. Financial calculators are not allowed, and the test center does not supply one. Check the current handbook before you go, since calculator policy is the kind of detail that gets updated.

Time and format

Both exams are 145 questions in 150 minutes: 130 scored plus 15 unscored pretest questions, mixed in and unmarked. There is no penalty for guessing, so answer everything. The passing score is 70 on a 0 to 100 scaled score, and it is not a percent correct. You are scored on the exam as a whole, not on each half. Candidates whose first language is not English may request 1.5 times the time, with a letter. Spanish exams let candidates switch between Spanish and English.

If you do not pass

A candidate who fails may schedule a new exam within one day, and there is no limit on attempts. You pay the fee again each time. You leave the test center with an official score report.
