The testing effect: why quizzing yourself beats reviewing

The single best-supported finding in learning science is also the easiest to skip. Here's what it actually says.

If there is one finding in learning science that is both extremely well replicated and routinely ignored by students, it's the testing effect: taking a test on material, even with no feedback, produces better long-term retention than spending the same amount of time re-studying it.

The 2006 study people actually cite

Roediger and Karpicke ran the version of this that gets quoted most often. Students studied a passage, then either restudied it or took a recall test on it, with no extra feedback either way. A week later, the group that had only been tested remembered more than the group that got extra study time - despite having spent less time looking at the material and feeling less confident about it right after.

That last part matters. Right after studying, the re-readers felt more prepared. A week later, they knew less. Confidence and retention were pointing in opposite directions.

Why retrieval works better than review

The leading explanation isn't that testing is a magic trick - it's that pulling information out of memory is a different, harder task than recognising it on a page, and the harder task builds a stronger, more accessible memory trace. Re-reading strengthens your ability to recognise the material. Testing strengthens your ability to produce it. Exams ask for the second thing.
