The forgetting curve, and why it's not the enemy

Forgetting isn't a study failure. It's a predictable process, and once you can predict it, you can schedule around it.

In 1885, a psychologist named Hermann Ebbinghaus memorised lists of nonsense syllables and tested himself on them at increasing delays, using himself as the only subject. The result is now called the forgetting curve, and it has held up remarkably well for something discovered before the word "psychology" meant much of anything.

The shape of it

Forgetting is not linear. You lose most of a new memory in the first day or two, then the rate of loss slows down. A week after learning something once, you might retain 20-30% of it. That is not a personal failing. It is what unrepeated memories do.

The part people miss: the curve resets and flattens every time you successfully recall the thing. Ebbinghaus's own relearning experiments showed this - each pass through the material took less time than the last, because some trace of it survived. Recall it once and the curve is gentler. Recall it a few times, spaced out, and it can flatten almost to nothing for months.

Why "I forgot it" is not evidence you failed

Students treat forgetting as proof that studying didn't work. It's proof that time passed. The forgetting curve is a property of memory in general, not of your memory in particular, and not of whether your study method was any good.

The actionable insight is not "stop forgetting" - you can't. It's "review right before you would have forgotten," which is a scheduling problem, not a willpower problem.
