PTCE passing score: what 1,400 really means

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) reports a scaled score rather than a percentage, which leaves many candidates unsure how well they need to do. Here is what PTCB publishes, read on ptcb.org on 2026-09-23.

The numbers PTCB gives

• The passing scaled score is 1,400.
• Scores run from 1,000 to 1,600.
• The exam is 90 multiple-choice questions: 80 scored and 10 unscored.
• You get about 2 hours in total: a 5-minute tutorial, a 1 hour 50 minute exam, and a 5-minute survey.

What a scaled score is (and is not)

A scaled score converts your raw performance onto a fixed range so results are comparable between different versions of the exam. It is not a percent correct. PTCB does not publish a raw number of correct answers needed, a pass rate, or a number of questions per domain, so any claim that you need "70%" or "56 correct" is a guess. Because the raw score needed can shift between exam forms, the exam pass score calculator can only give you a rough working margin. The 10 unscored questions are mixed in and unmarked, so treat every question as if it counts.

Where the points are

The exam outline effective January 6, 2026 weights the four domains this way: Medications 35%, Federal Requirements 18.75%, Patient Safety and Quality Assurance 23.75%, and Order Entry and Processing 22.50%. If you do not pass

PTCB's published retake rules are:

• You pay for each attempt.
• There is no wait before your 2nd or 3rd attempt.
• There is a 6-month wait before the 4th attempt.
• After 4 attempts, PTCB must approve evidence of your preparation before you can test again.

Who can sit for it

PTCB's eligibility rule requires either completion of a PTCB-recognized education or training program (or finishing one within 60 days of applying), or equivalent work experience as a pharmacy technician, with a minimum of 500 hours. CPhT eligibility and recertification has the rest.
