CPhT eligibility and recertification, explained

Two practical questions come up before and after the PTCE: who is allowed to take it, and what it takes to keep the Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential. This post sticks to what PTCB publishes. Fees and requirements change without notice, so confirm details on ptcb.org before you act.

Who can sit for the exam

Per PTCB's CPhT page (read 2026-09-23), you qualify through one of two routes:

• completion of a PTCB-recognized education or training program, or completion within 60 days of your application, or
• equivalent work experience as a pharmacy technician, with a minimum of 500 hours.

Encodr's fact files also record that applicants must live in the US or its territories and fully disclose criminal history and board actions. Treat those as points to confirm with PTCB.

What the exam looks like

The PTCE is 90 multiple-choice questions, 80 scored and 10 unscored, with a passing scaled score of 1,400 on a 1,000 to 1,600 range. PTCE passing score: what 1,400 really means explains that number and the retake rules, and the 2026 PTCE content outline shows what changed this year.

Recertification

PTCB states that CPhT recertification is required every two years. Encodr's fact files record the details as: 20 hours of continuing education that are technician-specific and ACPE-accredited, including 1 hour of pharmacy law and 1 hour of patient safety; at most 10 hours from a college course with a grade of C or better; and no carry-over between cycles. PTCB's public renewal page confirms the two-year cycle but does not list those hour figures, so verify them in PTCB's recertification FAQ.

Why it matters when you study

Recertification's law and patient safety hours reflect two areas the exam weights heavily: Federal Requirements (18.75%) and Patient Safety and Quality Assurance (23.75%). Studying them properly now pays off both on the exam and later. DEA drug schedules for the PTCE covers a core federal topic.
