Desirable difficulties: why easy studying doesn't work
If a study method feels smooth and comfortable, that's usually a sign it isn't building much memory.
The psychologist Robert Bjork coined the term "desirable difficulty" to describe something that feels wrong to most students: making learning harder, in specific controlled ways, makes it stick better. Not harder as in worse material or less sleep - harder as in more effortful retrieval.
Ease is a false signal
Your brain uses fluency - how smoothly information seems to process - as a shortcut for "how well do I know this." That shortcut is usually wrong during study. Re-reading a paragraph gets smoother each time because you're pattern-matching the page, not because the fact is more available in memory. The smoothness is real. The competence it implies is not.
This is why re-reading and highlighting feel productive and produce so little: they optimise for a feeling that doesn't track learning.
What counts as a "desirable" difficulty
Not all difficulty helps. Confusing material, badly written cards, and material you don't understand yet are just difficult - undesirable difficulty. Bjork's point is narrower: difficulties that force your memory to do the work of retrieving, rather than difficulties that just make the task unpleasant, are the ones that pay off. Examples:
- Testing yourself instead of rereading (see the testing effect).
- Spacing reviews out so each attempt requires real retrieval, not recognition of something you just saw (see the retention curve simulator for why the gap between reviews is what makes this work).
- Mixing topics instead of grouping them - see interleaving.
- Generating an answer yourself before checking it, rather than reading it first.
Each of these makes the in-the-moment experience harder and slower. Each one produces better long-term recall than the easier alternative.
The practical rule
If a study session feels effortless, that is not a good sign. It usually means you're reviewing something you already knew, or rehearsing recognition instead of recall. The sessions that feel like a genuine struggle - digging for an answer you're not sure you have - are usually the ones doing the most for you.
This is also why spaced repetition apps feel a little uncomfortable by design. A card that comes back right before you'd forget it is supposed to be a struggle. That struggle is the mechanism, not a flaw in the scheduling.
