Cramming vs. spacing: what the research actually says

Cramming isn't irrational. It optimises for the wrong exam - the one tomorrow, not the one that matters in a month.

Cramming gets treated like a moral failing, which misses why it's so common: it works, for a narrow definition of "work." If the only test that exists is tomorrow's, massing all your study time right before it is a completely reasonable strategy. The problem is what happens after.

The meta-analysis

Nicholas Cepeda and colleagues ran a large review of spacing research in 2006, pulling together decades of studies comparing massed practice (cramming) against distributed practice (spacing study sessions apart) on retention. The pattern was consistent across an enormous range of material and delays: spaced practice produced better long-term retention than massed practice, and the advantage got larger the longer the gap between studying and testing.

Crucially, this isn't spacing being slightly better. In many of the studies, the gap in performance days or weeks later was large enough to be the difference between passing and failing.

Why cramming still feels like the smart move

Cramming produces short-term fluency - the material feels fresh and available right up until the test, because you just saw it. That's a real effect, and it genuinely helps with a test the next morning. It's also exactly the fluency illusion described in desirable difficulties: what feels available in the next twelve hours and what's actually stored in long-term memory are two different things, and cramming only builds the first one.

The trade-off is specific: cramming buys you tomorrow at the cost of next month. If there's no next month - the class ends, the material never comes back - that trade might be fine. Most classes are not built that way. Material from week 3 shows up on the final, and material from this course shows up in the one after it.

What spacing actually requires

Spacing doesn't mean studying less. It means the same total amount of time, spread across more sessions with real gaps between them, so each session involves actual retrieval rather than rehearsal of something still fresh. The hard part is that it requires planning ahead - you can't space out three days of studying the night before an exam. It has to start early, in smaller doses, which is the entire reason spaced repetition tools exist: to make the scheduling automatic instead of something you have to plan yourself.
